Dr. Hema Palanyiaya

Dr Palanyiaya is a Consultant Neurodevelopmental Paediatrician with over 13 years of paediatric experience. She is a full-time NHS Consultant and sub-specialises in Community Child Health and Paediatric Neurodisability. She is currently the Lead Consultant for Neurodisability, Muscle Tone Management and Paediatric Transitional Care to adult services at Evelina Community Child Health London (Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust).

Dr Palanyiaya qualified from the University of Southampton and completed her foundation training in Dorset, where she first developed an interest in paediatrics. She began her specialty paediatric training in Kent, Surrey & Sussex, before embarking on subspecialty training in community child health and neurodisability in London and the East of England. Dr Palanyiaya has been privileged to work under the guidance of experts in renowned centres, such as Great Ormond Street Hospital, Evelina London Children’s Services and Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust, where she acquired specialist knowledge of the complexities of neurodisability and neurodiversity across all paediatric age ranges.

Dr Palanyiaya has a busy NHS practice. Alongside her lead roles, she works in autism (and related disorders) clinics, botulinum toxin injection clinics (botox) for muscle spasticity, muscle tone management clinics, special educational needs schools and general neurodisability clinics. She manages children and young people with autism, ADHD, developmental impairment, learning disability, cerebral palsy, various genetic conditions, sleep difficulties, developmental coordination disorder, and several other neurodevelopmental conditions.

A significant part of her role involves collaborating with educators, psychologists, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to provide valuable medical insights and recommendations to develop personalised Education Healthcare Plans (EHCPs). She is passionate about ensuring that the learning environment is accessible, inclusive, and supportive of each child and young person’s unique requirements.

Dr Palanyiaya is enthusiastic about advancements within the field of paediatrics and actively participates in research opportunities. Her passion for academia has afforded her the opportunity to present numerous talks at national and international conferences. Dr Palanyiaya also has a wealth of educational experience and takes a keen interest in teaching and training the next generation of clinicians.

Dr Palanyiaya has been described as approachable and compassionate. She firmly believes in managing each child as an individual, personalising care with respect for the child and families’ particular needs and helping to optimise each child’s physical and emotional wellbeing.
