FAQ's

Assessment Procedure

Families seeking assessments for neurodevelopmental concerns, such as Autism and ADHD, are encouraged to reach out to Chase Lodge Hospital via Contact Us. Upon contact, the hospital will request completion of a concise referral form. This form facilitates the organisation and prioritisation of your child’s assessment by our team.

Upon submission of your form, you will receive an invitation to engage in a virtual complimentary screening consultation, which typically lasts 15 to 30 minutes. This consultation provides an opportunity to carefully consider and plan the assessment procedure, which may include discussions on specialised evaluations for Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), general developmental issues, or, if deemed appropriate, a recommendation for alternative services. Following this initial free consultation, appointments are scheduled accordingly.

Should you opt to continue with the assessment at Chase Lodge Hospital, the clinicians will engage in discussions regarding the applicable fees, requisite questionnaires, and the most suitable mode of assessment, whether virtual or in-person. Following this, the hospital administration will subsequently reach out to you to coordinate a mutually convenient date and time for the assessment.

Prior to the assessment, we kindly request that you provide any pertinent reports from previous professionals who have collaborated with your child, such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, educational psychologists, or paediatricians. Additionally, you will be provided with questionnaires to complete at least one week prior to your appointment. These questionnaires play a crucial role in collecting vital information pertaining to your child’s development and present functioning.

The Paediatric Neurodevelopmental Service at Chase Lodge Hospital comprises Consultant Paediatricians, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Clinical Psychologists. The clinicians in our team collaborate within a diverse team of experts in the same field to provide comprehensive care. The type of assessment conducted varies according to your child’s unique needs and would be discussed with you beforehand. The approaches utilised in our assessments adhere to the guidelines outlined by NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) and involve either one or a combination of the following options:

This assessment is conducted by professionals who are highly skilled and experienced in identifying potential developmental or physical health conditions. It is especially recommended for children under the age of 5 or for older children up to their 18th birthday when their neurodevelopmental profile is uncertain.

Assessment includes:

  • Pre-clinic questionnaires to gather contextual information from school, parents and other professionals involved in the care of the child/young person.
  • A 2-hour interview which includes a structured interview with parents/carers, developmental assessment & physical examination at Chase Lodge Hospital. This is administered by a Paediatrician.
  • 30-minute feedback session to parents and child/young person post-assessment. Feedback is usually given on the same day as the assessment, but sometimes we might need more information, which we will discuss with you directly.
  • comprehensive report detailing all findings and recommendations will be sent to you within 28 working days of the initial assessment. The report would include medical insights and recommendations to educators and wider multi-disciplinary team, ensuring that the plan addresses the child/young person’s medical, developmental, and educational needs comprehensively

Post-Diagnostic Support

Following diagnosis, Chase Lodge Hospital can provide multidisciplinary support as required, via Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Clinical Psychologists to establish achievable goals and strategies to support the child/young person’s health, development, and educational progress.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is diagnosed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals who are highly skilled and experienced in carrying out diagnostic assessments. There are 5 components to the assessment:

  • Pre-clinic questionnaires to gather contextual information from school, parents and other professionals involved in the care of the child/young person.
  • detailed interview with a parent/guardian/family member who can provide information about the individual’s current presentation and developmental history. This would be done in combination with the Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADI).  ADI is a clinically structured interview with parent/carers to identify specific neurodevelopmental concerns related to conditions such as autism, developmental language disorder, learning difficulties and emotional needs. This is administered by the Paediatrician on the same day or virtually on another day with parents/carers.
  • Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – 2 (ADOS-2) assessment: This is a standardised play and/or interview-based assessment that determines strengths and difficulties in the core aspects associated with ASD: communication, social interaction, play and imagination, and restricted/repetitive interests and behaviours. This is administered by the Speech and language therapist, occupational therapist or psychologist and takes between 45 and 90 minutes. If both the ADOS-2 and ADI-R are conducted simultaneously, the whole assessment would typically last for 2.5 hours.
  • Multidisciplinary discussions once all the information has been gathered by the team, which would be followed by a 30-minute multidisciplinary feedback session to parents and child/young person post-assessment. Feedback is usually given on the same day as the assessment, but sometimes we might need more information, which we will discuss with you directly.
  • comprehensive report detailing all findings and recommendations will be sent to you within 28 working days of the initial assessment. The report would include medical insights and recommendations to educators and wider multi-disciplinary team, ensuring that the plan addresses the child’s medical, developmental, and educational needs comprehensively

Post-Diagnostic Support

Following diagnosis, Chase Lodge Hospital can provide multidisciplinary autism information workshop, speech therapy, clinical psychology input, and occupational therapy support, in addition to signposting to local support groups and charities. Support provided would be aimed at establishing achievable goals and strategies to support the child/young person’s health, development, and educational progress.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is diagnosed by professionals who are highly skilled and experienced in carrying out diagnostic assessments. There are 4 components to the assessment:

  • Pre-clinic questionnaires to gather contextual information from school, parents and other professionals involved in the care of the child/young person.
  • detailed interview with a parent/guardian/family member who can provide information about the individual’s current presentation and developmental history. This would typically last about 1.5 hours and is administered by a Paediatrician or a CAMHS Consultant.
The report would include medical insights and recommendations to educators and wider multi-disciplinary team, ensuring that the plan addresses the child’s medical, developmental, and educational needs comprehensively
  • Post-Diagnostic Support

Following diagnosis, further support at Chase Lodge Hospital may be available via behavioural interventions, educational assistance, occupational therapy input and access to workshops offering strategies for coping with ADHD. Parents and child/young person would also be signposted to local support groups and charities. If medication is indicated, a further appointment can be arranged to discuss this with the parents and child/young person. Support provided would be aimed at establishing achievable goals and strategies to support the child/young person’s health, development, and educational progress.

Conditions such as Developmental Coordination Disorder, Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), Learning Disability, and Mental Health disorders can be assessed upon request or as an additional recommendation. The necessary assessment is conducted by clinicians who are highly skilled and experienced in the particular field. Depending on the assessment, this could be conducted by a Consultant Paediatrician, Speech and Language Therapist, Occupational Therapist or Clinical Psychologist. A comprehensive report detailing all findings and recommendations will be sent to you within 28 working days of the initial assessment. The report would include medical insights and recommendations to educators and wider multi-disciplinary team, ensuring that the plan addresses the child’s medical, developmental, and educational needs comprehensively

Post-Diagnostic Support

Following diagnosis, Chase Lodge Hospital can provide multidisciplinary support as required, via Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Clinical Psychologists to establish achievable goals and strategies to support the child/young person’s health, development, and educational progress.
